What is a Niche?
Ok i’m not going to write lots of information on this as i’m guessing that you are super keen to get down to the nuts and bolts regarding how you find your niche. However, “A niche is a focused, targetable part of the market. You are a specialist providing a product or service that focuses on specific client group’s needs, which cannot or are not addressed in such detail by mainstream providers.”
So to explain this in simple terms. You are looking to find an ‘opportunity’ such as an ebook, website, product that solves a chosen markets problem. You are looking for people who are desperate to have their specific problem solved. So lets assume your chosen market was in the ‘pregnancy niche’
Candy found that bloating during pregnancy and also trying to lose her tummy after giving birth to Ella was something that she was very self conscious about. So in effect Candy was a desperate ‘buyer’. She would spend hours on the Internet looking through products, ebooks and participating in forums that fixed this problem (the bloating and pregnancy weight as quickly as possible with as little effort as possible). Candy purchased products on Ebay and joined forum groups so that she could have this ‘problem’ solved. So this was a niche inside a niche (a sub-niche). By purchasing books and products on Ebay someone had focused on this ‘opportunity’ (niche) and was providing a solution to Candy’s problem. And this is exactly what you are going to do.
You are going to find a niche (a targetable part of the market – so someone like Candy) and you are going to develop an ebook, website, book etc that solves their problem.
What is a ‘sub-niche’?
You can drill a niche down even further into what is called a ‘sub-niche’. This is where the niche that you have chosen is too large so you want to find a niche inside a niche. An example of this would be in the ‘dog training’ niche. So for example a niche inside the ‘dog training’ niche maybe ‘dog tricks’, ‘agility training’, ‘house training a dog’, ‘housebreaking a dog’, ‘dog aggression’.
Ok so I think you get the picture. If for example you were particularly interested in a niche about ‘dog breeds’ you could narrow this down into a sub-niche where you target specific breeds inside the main ‘dog breeds’ niche (such as a sub-niche around ‘Yorkshire Terriers’, ‘Akitas etc).
Passion is POWER!
Ok I agree with this statement mostly. The reason I say mostly is because some things that you are passionate about may not have a hungry market of desperate buyers that need their problem solved. You need to find a topic that you have some interest in or at the very least you are not going to get bored if you need to write an ebook or authority website on your chosen niche. I say this because in the good old days it was fairly easy to start a website, write a few articles sprinkled with related keywords to your niche, get a few back links and BINGO you would be ranking in Google and making sales (so it didn’t really matter if you were not that passionate about writing about your niche as it would only take a few well written articles about your niche to rank in Google). However, since the Panda and Penguin updates from Google, websites need to have good, unique content with relevant and consistent natural links pointing to your site to start to rank highly in the search engines. I’m not saying you can’t rank highly in Google for your niche I am simply stating the facts. If you want to create a website around a niche you need to:
A: Choose a niche that has a market of hungry and desperate buyers looking for a problem to be solved.
B: Reasonable to low competition so your website can rank fairly quickly in Google.
C: Unique and high quality content that is relevant to your niche and is NOT stuffed full of your chosen keyword throughout the whole of the site. It’s ok to mention your keyword a few times as Google need to know that your site is relevant to the keyword people are searching for (just keep it natural).
Anyway, I said I wasn’t going to get into SEO but it gives you a little idea if you want to build a website. If you choose the right niche and use the above steps you will rank for your keyword. Just be consistent. You have chosen your niche so STICK WITH IT. Do not go after the next idea or fall into what’s called ‘shiny object syndrome’ (where you skip from one idea to the next) otherwise you will never succeed.
Have faith in the system and your judgement.
